Welcome to the USPSA's
Junior Program

Welcome to USPSA, shooting's "extreme sport." Practical shooters are moving through courses (called stages) shooting at targets with a pistol, rifle or shotgun at distances from arm's length to 50 yards. We negotiate obstacles, duck around corners, open doors and anything we can to reach the end of the stage quickly and safely, all the while doing it as fast and accurately as our skills allow.

If you think "shooting" involves standing on your hind legs and aiming at a big black dot -- have we got news for you! If you can't learn to safely hustle around a wall or through a tunnel, reloading on the way, you might be on the wrong website.

USPSA juniors wowed the practical shooting world in 2005, winning the world junior title at World Shoot XIV in Quayaquil, Ecuador. Having a USPSA junior win the top spot was no surprise, but having USPSA juniors place in the top 16 overall, both at the U.S. Nationals, and on the world stage (USPSA Junior Chris Tilley finished 8th at World Shoot XIV, followed by USPSA's J.J. Racaza at 12th), was something very new!

USPSA has a wide range of programs to support its juniors, ranging from "Camp Shootout" where juniors go for a week of hands-on coaching by national and world champions Kay and Jerry Miculek, to equipment and course tuition support programs. Juniors find the rank & file USPSA membership to be extremely supportive, helping them find the necessary travel, firearm, and equipment support they need. There are significant legal issues associated with minors using handguns in this country (like not being allowed to own one), but in most states you can compete under the observation of a parent/guardian using their equipment without legal hassles.

If you are a junior of good character, we sincerely hope you'll join us at the range, and we are committed to supporting you as best we can when you do.

2008 U.S. Junior Invitational Update - Applications for the match are coming in and we have room for more juniors. I have been receiving questions about what will happen if the match reaches capacity at 200 competitors. --more--
"How to Start a Jr Team" Workbook
I receive many emails asking how we recruit and put a junior team together. This gave me an idea that we had better put together a 'How to Build a Junior Team' workbook and give anyone who wants to start a junior team some help and the benefit of our experiences. If you want to take a look at this workbook, get it now. There is no right and wrong when it comes to getting young people involved in our shooting sport. If you keep safety first and fun second you will find new juniors every week.
Donation from the Single Stack

Richard Heinie presented the USPSA Junior Program with a donation check for $2,500 at the Single Stack Nationals. The donation will be used to help build support for the Single Stack Division among Junior shooters.

New Magazine: Junior Shooters

Junior Shooters strives to be the first of its kind to promote juniors involved in shooting and the many disciplines they are shooting, all in one publication. Junior Shooters is dedicated to juniors of all ages, but primarily from the age of eight to 21, depending upon the shooting sport.

Junior shooters and their parents now have a publication they can go to and find what is needed to get started in many different shooting venues. Questions will be answered about guns and gear needed, protective gear, events, organizations and more.

The premier issue of Junior Shooters, Volume 1, was published in August, 2007 and is receiving an outstanding response! It will be published quarterly starting in 2008. Regular subscription rate $24.95 a year, $15 to USPSA members.

USPSA Scholarship

USPSA awards one scholarship per area (2008 scholarship subject to BOD budget approval). These scholarships are administered the the area directors. The application process and deadline is established by each area director, so juniors should apply to their Area Director as soon as possible for consideration.

Brian Haas Memorial Scholarship

Brian Haas was a USPSA member who attended the first USPSA Junior Camp in 1996 at the age of 16, and was killed while performing his duties as a police officer in 2004. Brian's family and friends have established the Brian Haas Memorial Trust to help support the USPSA Junior Program. For more information contact Nori Haas at bnabhaas@aol.com, or use this application form.

You can read more about Brian Haas at his Officer Down Memorial Page.

The Brian Haas scholarship program is administered by the Brian Haas Memorial Trust, and is completely independent of USPSA.
